It is hard to pinpoint exactly when snowboarding as we know it first really began. Since the early 1920's pioneers have been experimenting with all different ways to slide down on the mountain on a board.

Many different contraptions have been used over the years. The first recognised snowboard was invented through marrying skateboarding and surfing with skiing. Known as the "Snurfboard" riders held held onto a rope attached to the front for stability and were not even strapped onto the board.

February 28, 2005 16:34 - Local Skier Killed In Snowboarding Collision

JACKSON, Wyo -- A Maryland teenager was charged with manslaughter after a fatal collision with a skier at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Authorities would not release the name or hometown of the 16-year-old snowboarder, who also was charged Friday with reckless endangering. Teton County Sheriff's Sgt. Lloyd Funk said the county attorney would decide whether the teen should be tried as a juvenile or an adult. The manslaughter charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
