Get Into The Awesome Activities in Whistler

Apart from snowboarding and skiing on the mountain, there are an abundance of other activities that take place.

When the days weren't so good for boarding, we took the opportunity to diverse a bit and dive into a few more activities or look for better snow!

Catskiing
Snowmobiling
Dog Sledding
Snowshoeing
Ziptrek
Heliskiing
Sleigh Ride

Get On a Cat and Board/Ski Your Day Away

Now this has got to be one of the best days we have ever had! Imagine this; untouched, endless powder, with fresh tracks ALL day long - no lines, no crowds, just you, your board, the mountain and the best guides you could want. With only a maximum of 12 people in your group, an amazing day is guaranteed.

The day started off with a hearty breakfast at the Southside Diner. Due to the freezing levels, it was unsure whether we were going to make it up. I questioned as to why that would prevent us from enjoying the day. Powder Mountain Catskiing advised me that they sell powder and won't take you up if there is any chance the won't deliver. We were quite impressed that they would ensure only the best and freshest powder possible.

After breakfast we started our 20 minute journey south of Whistler where we would ride on Tricouni Mountain. Once we arrived, we all hopped in the snow cat and experienced a pleasurable ride up to the top of the mountain. In the cat, we had a lot to talk about. Our guides, Doug Lundgren (one of Canada's original pro riders) and Ken Achenbach (Member of the Snowboard Hall of Fame), were never short of conversation. It was great to ride with these guys, the first guys to snowboard on Whistler mountain!

In a day, we got in eight runs of fresh powder! It was insane. Depending on the ability of the group, will determine what terrain you cover. We had some nice open plains, unreal tree runs and steep down hills throughout the day. The crew we had were a bunch of fun. Encouraging you to try new things and board with a smile on your face.

At the end of a run, you jump in the cat to do it all over again. There is no need to bring water, snacks, fruit or lunch. These are all included and there is plenty on board for everyone.

A great aspect about Powder Mountain Catskiing is you have the opportunity to ride with pro snowboarders, Tricouni mountain receives 40-50% more snow than Whistler Blackcomb (The day we went, Whistler measured 19cm of fresh snow, Tricouni measured 43cm!), and its cheaper than heliskiing.

This is an experience we will never forget and if someone asked us if we wanted to do it again....We'd go in a heart beat!

If you're heading to Whistler Blackcomb and looking for powder, look no further than Powder Mountain Catskiing.

Get On A Snowmobile

Snowmobiling was awesome. We went on a 2-hour snowmobile tour and saw some amazing scenery. You have the opportunity to share the snowmobile or have it all to yourself. We were sharing, but once I got in the drivers seat, all I wanted to do was drive! So it may mean a little bit more of an investment to get your own
snowmobile, but its definitely worth it.

They will take you from your village accommodation, or the village shop in the middle of town on the Cougar Mountain bus to the mountain.  There you will get a quick safety demonstration on your snowmobile and you are on your way.

The highlight of the trip is when they take you to a frozen lake where you can really open the ski-doo right up to as fast as you wish.  It is like a NASCAR race loop on the frozen lake.

If you're looking for my recommendation, I would go for a longer tour and definitely get your own snowmobile, rather than share.

Dog Sledding

Wow, what an experience.

In a dog sled. Being pulled by 6 Alaskan Racing Huskies through the snowy mountains. You get to harness the dogs and also assist in driving them too. This may seem like a pricey activity, but the experience is unbelievable.

You will get a chance to make a relationship with the dogs by setting up the sled and feeding the dogs.

You can only fit 2 adults in the dog sled (and a child if needed). So cuddle up.

If You Can Walk... You Can Snowshoe!

This is a lot of fun and a great workout. All you do is strap on some snowshoes and you're away. Our guide took us through some magnificent trails and we 'snowshoed' our way to some spectacular views.

We did the easy trail in 2 hours. It was an experience that we would like to try again. We might even buy our own snowshoes.

We think its always worth trying an activity that you can't do at home, or have never done before. It gives you something different to do. And we're glad we did it.

For all our tours, we went through Cougar Mountain. It was nice to explore another mountain other than Whistler and Blackcomb.

It gave us different views and trails that I hadn't been on before. Cougar Mountain have been around for 22 years and have received awards for their tours.

Ziptrek

This is an activity for everyone of all ages. To describe the activity, we each had our own harness strapped snug on our bodies and we 'zip' along a cable - just like a flying fox. We started with a practice zip in the village before heading into the rainforest that lies between Whistler and Blackcomb mountain.
Throughout the tour, we received small ecological talks and were informed about the rainforest and his habitat.
We had four 'zips' in total and the longest zip was 1100 feet. Each time we zipped, we went changed mountains (between Whistler and Blackcomb). We took pictures of each other and also whilst we were zipping. The last zip allowed us to do some tricks if we felt like it. With the crew demonstrating how to zip upside down. So...we did. It was cool fun.
This is a safe activity and will give everyone an adrenaline rush. Learning about the rainforest and getting a bit of kicks for the day was a nice change from being up the mountain.

Heliskiing

Picture this:
The helicopter lands on the peak of the mountain. You strap on your board and cruise down the most magnificent untouched terrain. The sun is beaming down on you as your riding through knee deep powder. Carving fresh tracks wherever you go, your day consists of boarding at the top of the mountains, with breath-taking views and of course...

...the best boarding experience of your life.

With the snow not being the best on the mountains at the moment, heliskiing is one of the most popular activities. Whistler Heliskiing provides over 24 years of service and knows how to give YOU the most memorable experience.

Sleigh Rides

Want to indulge in an activity after the slopes, but too tired? Well, a sleigh ride would be the way to go. We went on a twilight sleigh ride at 5pm. Jumping on, Eric our driver, introduced himself and our team....

...our horses were Tom and Jerry. Which horses will you have?

We left from Base 2 on Blackcomb and were pulled all around the mountain. It was relaxing, peaceful and not to mention romantic. Eric, has been driving sleighs for over 25 years now, and hasn't flipped on yet! That was reassuring.

We got some great views, pictures and information. Did you know that on a busy night each horse gets fed 3 gallons of oats, 100lbs of hay and 20 gallons of water?

We went with Blackcomb sleigh rides, and they are a great bunch to book with. This activity is for everyone; for couples, adults and most importantly the whole family.

Ensure that you pre-book, as during the Christmas/New Year week, a whopping 300 people jump on a sleigh ride a night!

Blackcomb Sleigh Rides have a variety of tours including dinner sleigh rides. Check out their site to choose a tour that suits your time and budget.

*Season dates: November 25th - March 31st every year.
