Frozen water all around you but none to drink.

One of the most neglected yet important aspects of winter sports body maintenance is hydration. On a hot summer day hike it's much easier to keep up with your body's loss of water because the heat of the day is a constant reminder of your thirst. But in winter the cold conditions make it harder to respond to thirst. Not only is it unappealing to take a long drink of cold water when it's below freezing weather, it seems our brains just don't make hydration a priority as much as in summer. Whistler Blackcomb has experienced a week full of snow and conditions are great in the alpine.

Forget what everyone is cursing about the latest snow season and get up high to experience some of the long awaited fresh snow.

It is snowing up the mountain again today and all the runs have nice snow and powder is everywhere off the runs. Precipitation is expected all week so the conditions can only get better.

March 17, 2005 17:04 - Snow, snow and more snow!

It has finally snowed again in the village and everybody is smiling again. Thats right we received a few cm's of snow in the village on Wednesday morning and a lot more up the mountain. There was 14cm recorded at the roundhouse.

You know what that means? Fresh powder for everyone to enjoy up the mountain. I went up today and there was a nice dump of new snow and the crowds are down. I didn't have to wait in any lines today. Make the most of it before the weekend rush and Mexican spring break.

All reports are predicting further snow for the coming 4 days so it is only going to get better. Lets hope we get another dump down here in the village as well.

So pack up your snow gear and head up to enjoy some great late season conditions while they are here.

March 20, 2005 17:20 - The Most Fresh Snow All Season at Whistler Blackcomb Right Now!

20cm of fresh snow in the village last night and over 30cm fell in the alpine. That on top of the snow from the last couple of days means there is over 50cm or fresh snow to play on up the mountain. This is the most fresh snow the mountains have had all season.

A cold front that began on Wednesday has continued to dump loads of snow all the way up the mountain. There is even just enough snow on the lower runs which have not been open all season.

Today the upper alpine was closed due to high winds however there was so much snow all over the mountains that it didn't matter. People took the opportunity to explore runs that have not been open thus far.

The good news is guys we have another 10-25cm expected tonight which will mean even better conditions tomorrow.

March 28, 2005 19:15 - It's been a busy weekend

Sorry I have not updated the site the last few days but I have not had an internet connection or even a phone line. The good news is I am back online now and there is fresh snow falling in the alpine.

It was delightful to wake up Saturday morning to 15cm of fresh snow in the village. The upper alpine was closed but my estimates are well over 20cm of snow fell up to Rendezves.

It's been raining in the village and snowing for the past few days in the alpine. There is also a number of low pressure systems on the way which should create a lot more snow. Lets hope the freezing lowers and we get dumped on in the village.

March 28, 2005 19:24 - Voted #5 for spring snowboarding this year

According to SkiSnowboard.com Whistler Blackcomb is number 5 in the top ten spring ski locations this year. Number one this spring is mammoth mountain in California. The top 5 resorts are listed below:

1. Mammoth Mountain CA
2. Mount Bachelor, Oregon
3. Lake Tahoe, CO
4. Summit County, CO
5. Whistler Blackcomb, BC

Being voted number 5 isn't a bad effort considering this season has been the worst for snowfall in over 3 years. It just goes to show how good this end of season snowfall really is right now.

We are experiencing the first real amounts of snow for the whole winter and conditions are definitely at there best of the entire season. Over 1 meter of snow has fallen over the last week and a half with a lot more on the way. Whistler Blackcomb is receiving some of the best conditions in North America at the moment.

Spring break is over and the lift lines are diminishing. If there was a time to hit the mountains it is now.

March 29, 2005 19:01 - Alpental avalanche kills one man, injures another

One man died and another was injured after being buried in a small avalanche at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington yesterday.

The two men had apparently converted their alpine skis to Nordic skis and climbed a steep, rugged section of the Alpental Ski Area that had been closed for lack of snow, said Jon Pretty, Summit at Snoqualmie spokesman.

They were resting shortly after noon near the avalanche-prone International Cliffs when a roughly 100-foot section of snow sloughed off, carrying them partway down the mountain, he said.

I have a pair of Flow FL-5 bindings which I love but managed to break a pin in the snap tool on the weekend. To my surprise without much pressure at all the pin snapped and my binding was useless.

I had to go to all of the dealers in Whistler and not one had the replacement part or heard of the problem until I spoke to the guys at Katmandu Mountain Sports. These guys seemed to be the only ones with any idea.

I was informed that the binding has been recalled and a new pin installed. This can be done at no charge at your local dealer, if they are aware of the problem. If you are in Whistler see the helpful staff at Katmandu, they will help you.

It has recently been discovered that the axle pin used to secure the rear snaplock lever to the highback of 2004 Flow MK Series Bindings requires replacement to prevent possible injury. Please be aware this is the FL series in USA and Canada.
