Snowboarding News and Information

This is no April fools guys, you heard it right Whistler Blackcomb received 43cm of fresh snow overnight totalling over 52cm of snow in the last 24 hours. That is easily the biggest dump of the season.

It has been snowing all day up the mountain adding onto that magical powder that has coated both mountains. High winds have caused the alpine to be closed today meaning there will be some great conditions when it is reopened which could be tomorrow.

The best of news is still to come. There is a number of low pressure systems hitting us in the next 4 days expecting to deliver 10-20cm of snow each day. I was up there today and it is by far the best it has been all season which will only get better with the upcoming snow.

We seem to be experiencing a late onset of winter this season and with the base at nearly 250cm we might still have a chance to make it to the 300cm snowbase milestone most resorts dream about.

Crepes for dinner you say? Yes, I never associated having crepes for dinner but the truth is they are extremely tasty and surprisingly filling, making it a very unique meal.
Most of us just associate crepes with a sweet snack or savory breakfast meal, I know I did. But after heading out to Crepe Montagne in Whistler village for an awesome dinner, I now think very differently and encourage you to do the same.

An amazing variety of crepes and fondue styles exist and these guys serve the most unique. Once you dine here you will be back for more and more just like everyone else who has discovered this tantalizing niche.

April 9, 2005 15:36 - Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival Kicks Off!

Yesterday marked the beginning of 9 days of fun and festivities for Whistler with the start of the 2005 Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival. This is the biggest event of the year for Whistler and this years calendar looks very exciting.
Events include the DKNY Outdoor concert series featuring some big names like Finger Eleven, The Tea Party, Michael Franti and many more. These concerts are held at the base of the gondola's on the main stage.

Kokanee is holding a Freeride party at various locations each night of the festival at 9pm. The major local bars will be hosting these nightly parties. Smirnoff Axis parties are also held daily along with the big Smirnoff Experience dance party on April 16th which will be the big finale.

Other exiting events include a number of sponsored parties, filmmaker's showdown, photographer's showdown, art festival, snowboard art exhibition, collective novel writing, rail sessions, skate demonstrations and much much more.

Lets not forget why we are here also with the big ski and snowboard invitationals being held up Blackcomb mountain including half pipe contests, slopestyle, rail sessions and more.

April 10, 2005 15:37 - Finger Eleven rock the night away

Last night Lisa and I headed into the village for the first outdoor concert of the Telus world ski and snowboard festival.
Finger Eleven did not disappoint with a rocking set playing until 10pm. There was a beer garden setup where those with ID could rock the night away with all alcohol sales going to charity.

Not to forget there is also some snow on the way with 5-10cm expected for tonight. With all this action, there is really only 1 place to be at the moment and that is Whistler BC.

April 14, 2005 15:38 - Are your muscles tired from some hard days on the mountian?

Head to Esperanza Day Spa for some serious muscle relief and complete relaxation.

Lisa and I decided to indulge in a sports massage one afternoon after a hard few days on the mountain in the powder. Our legs were very tired and sore and Lisa assured me that a sports massage will make everything OK.

I have never had a massage before so was very skeptical on heading to a day spa for a sports massage because it seems like a female thing for me. Finally I decided to give it a go and dam was that a good decision.

April 15, 2005 08:48 - Plenty of snow forecast for Blackcomb mountains last days of the season

There is a snow alert current in Whistler today with the arrival of a significant Pacific frontal system this morning bringing a forecast 40cm of snow to the mountains over the next 2 days. This is great news for the ski and snowboard invitational and also those die hard riders still hitting the mountains each day.

The frontal system is expected to bring 5-10cm of new snow today and a further 5-10cm tonight. Tomorrows forecast is calling for heavy snow at times with 10-20cm forecast through tomorrow afternoon.

It is perfect conditions for everyone to head up Blackcomb mountain for the last few days it will be open this season. Blackcomb is set to close for the winter on Sunday. From then on only Whistler mountain will be open until around mid June and then hopefully Blackcomb Glacier will reopen for summer riding depending on conditions.

So be sure to head up Blackcomb mountain and enjoy the last good snowfall expected for for the winter. Check out the Daily Snow Report page to get all the latest mountain conditions.

April 15, 2005 08:57 - We are going Powder Mountain Cat Boarding on Saturday

Lisa and I are booked in to go cat boarding on Saturday with 2 pro snowboarders on one of Powder mountains daily cat skiing expeditions. Haven't the gods turned it on for us with up to 40cm of snow expected by tomorrow afternoon meaning plenty of powder for the big day.

After hearing so much about this unique form of snowboarding we are so excited to get up there tomorrow. The day will begin with an early breakfast at the Southside diner in Creekside followed by fresh lines all day in excellent forecast conditions.

This method of snowboarding is comparable to Heli-boarding but instead of being taken up the mountain by helicopter you go up in a snowcat coach. I have heard so many great reports about this type of skiing/snowboarding as I am sure you have to. And to be boarding with a couple of pro snowboarders just tops it off.

April 18, 2005 20:20 - If you do enjoy powder, make sure you go catboarding

Well I don't quite know what to say about Powder mountain catboarding besides unbelievable and out of this world. Definitely one of the best experiences of my entire life.

On Saturday morning bright and early Lisa and I were ready to embark on our latest adventure, Powder Mountain Catskiing. We were a little worried when they almost called the trip off due to high freezing levels, but we were not disappointed. 43cm of fresh powder, the best guides and some of the most amazing terrain in the world made sure of that.

The reason we almost didn't go was due to the fact that these guys sell powder and will not go if they are not going to deliver. They did not want to take us out in less than perfect powder conditions.

It is amazing to not just how much snow this mountain gets compared to Whistler Blackcomb. Friday night Whistler received just 16cm of new snow while our powder mountain dumped a whopping 43cm. Being a lot closer to the ocean this mountain always gets more snow.

The full review will be up on the website in coming days but for now I will just tell anybody who enjoys skiing or snowboarding and is in Whistler to book a day with these guys and you wont be disappointed.

It is much better than heliskiing because you get many more runs, it is cheaper and the guides are pro and ex pro snowboarders who really make the day what it is. They things they teach you about reading the mountain and how to improve your skills are invaluable.

Lets just say that I have not stopped talking about this experience yet and will post the full report soon.

April 21, 2005 10:35 - Warm Days and Sunshine Galore

It looks like the cold weather has left us now as we are bathed in glorious sunshine and warm spring time temperatures every day.

This is great news for those of us looking to get outside and enjoy the outdoors in shorts and shirt but not so great for the snow conditions. You can certainly feel the super warm temperatures while up boarding and it is taking its effect on the snow melting very quickly.

So the idea would be to get up there sooner rather than later and make the most of the snow that is still remaining. Dress less in these warm conditions or you will be sweating all day and remember if you have wax on your board to use the hot wax.

The slushy conditions up Whistler are still awesome to have some fun on and it is a nice soft landing when you fall. Grab your camera and get out there and enjoy the magnificent spring conditions.

Or put on your summertime clothes and hire a bike or head out on one of the many mountain trails for a lovely walk or ride. You won't be disappointed.

April 22, 2005 09:25 - Earls Bistro is a great night out

Last week Lisa and I ventured down the village stroll for a lovely dinner at Earls Bistro.

Earls is a very hip and happening restaurant with a huge variety of food and amazing atmosphere. They have a huge variety of beers and beverages to choose from with many unique cocktails to keep make the mind and taste buds boggle and keep the lady's happy.

The food is great and staff very friendly making this a very memorable dining experience. It very much reminded me of a Sex in the City type ordeal with the lovely waitress's awesome food and cheap cocktails.

Earls is even a great place for a quiet drink and some nibblies after boarding. Just pull up a chair in the lounge and soak up the tunes and atmosphere.

April 23, 2005 12:54 - Get out and Enjoy the great weather

Well it is another fantastic day in Whistler with bright sunshine and warm weather once again. The past week has been 20+ degrees meaning the shorts and shirts are out and it is time to enjoy the outdoors.

The last few days we have opted not to go up the mountain and instead do some exploring around town. We have been down to Brandywine falls which are an amazing site and also had a few nice hikes through the forest.

We had a great afternoon yesterday down at Alpha Lake Park where we had a awesome sunset barbeque and played some frisbee and backyard cricket. There were plenty of other folk out there also enjoying the warm conditions.

So make sure you get out there and enjoy some of the magnificent wilderness that Whistler and surrounding areas has to offer. You will not be disappointed.
